Reflections on Spiritual Fatherhood

How can I become part of filling the father vacuum for other men?
(Week One: August 31, 2009)

First, we need to understand what is the father vacuum? Most men have the father vacuum and the depth and hurt of this vacuum depends on the relationship men had with their earthly fathers. If your father was a disciplinarian and harsh, you will think God is just waiting for you to mess up and punish you. If your earthly father was cold and distant, you will think that God is the same and you have to earn his love.  If your earthlyt father showed you love and you were close this vacuum is not as deep. But, most men live their entire lives wanting and waiting for the approval of their earthly fathers. Some get it and some do not.

So, how can I be a part of filling this vacuum?  First and foremost, I need to be a good listener. These men need to know that I care about them and I want them to come to understand the depth of love that their Father God has for them. No matter how much their earthly father loved them or showed them love, that love is so far beneath the great love that God has for them. Over time my desire for these men is that they will come to see God as their loving Father in the story of the prodigal son. Most men I have meet and are guiding into spiritual fatherhood have never received a blessing from their earthly father. So I hope that they will let me speak that blessing to them so they will open their hearts to allow Father God to heal them from the inside out. So, I need to be the person they trust, so the men will be open to talk about what is keeping them from experiencing the great love of God.

Prayer Power
Father God, help me to be a good listener, and be the spiritual father you desire for me to be for these men. Guide me and teach me into this role of spiritual fatherhood. Amen.
